Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
Life is tricky, scary, and sometimes the world really gets to me. We went over to my husbands Mimi's a few weeks ago and she kept talking about Jesus being a lighthouse in her life. I don't remember everything she said but for some reason God laid it on my heart to write about the significance of a lighthouse. I looked it up and the first few things I read were: 1. A lighthouse serves as an aid to maritime coastal navigation, 2. A warning of hazards, and 3. a guide to a ships destination. All of these relate to God. A lighthouse helps ships navigate the coast. The coast is rocky and unsafe just like life can be sometimes. If we choose to put God at the forefront of our lives He will help us navigate. This isn't to say that "bad things" don't come our way, but that when they do come, God will be there to guide us through the rough spots. If we choose to put God first, He can warn us about the hazards ahead. One way He does that is through the Bible. The Bible says that we will be persecuted because we have chosen to follow Him (John 15:20). Rocky and rough times are coming and we need to be prepared. With God first, whom shall I fear?
Matthew 8:12 says, "Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
Jesus is the LIGHT of the world. If I keep my eyes on Him the darkness can not overcome me. A lighthouse serves so many purposes and all of those can be simplified to state that a Lighthouse's purpose is to light the way for a ship. If I put my trust in Jesus, He will a light a path for me. The Lord has a plan for each of us. When we make God the lighthouse of our lives, there is nothing we can't do. I took the photo you see here in North Carolina on Oak Island. This Lighthouse guides ships just like God can guide us if we let Him. The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid?
A lighthouse is also related to us specifically. Are you living your life as a lighthouse for Christ? What I mean by that is, do your actions, words, and attitude point people to Jesus? We are commanded as Christians to spread the gospel. Sometimes I think we forget that it's not always our words that lead people to Jesus. People watch how we live our lives. How we respond when things happen to us. When something doesn't go our way do we cuss and throw a fit or do we realize that for some reason God didn't want that for us? Matthew 5:14-16 reads, " You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."
Jesus is asking us to let the light in us, the light we have because of Him, shine before all men so that they may too glorify God. My goal with these blog posts is share the wonderful things that God has provided me. As a teacher and a photographer, I hope that people don't see me, but that they see Jesus through me. All I have is because of Him. I am nothing without Him. I hope that this blog posts reminds you to allow God to be your lighthouse so that you can be a lighthouse to someone who needs Jesus.
